Prime snowbird season is just around the corner and for many of these fun and sun-seeking individuals, Silver Palms RV Resort in beautiful Okeechobee, FL is the destination of choice.
In addition to offering a host of on-site amenities and activities to keep guests and residents entertained – from relaxing in a large heated resort-style swimming pool to fishing in its five pristine lakes and from games of pickleball and volleyball to countless social activities planned by the resort’s full-time activities director – off-site experiences are also plentiful in and around Okeechobee during the Fall and Winter months.
Kicking it off is the Top of the Lake Christmas Festival on December 10. The festival begins at 10am and will continue through the end of the annual lighted night parade. The parade will begin at 6 pm where the city and county’s best will be presented in their holiday finery! The festival will be held in the FlaglerParks #3-4 and will include a variety of food, gift ideas, arts and crafts, music and fun.
From February 11-12, Okeechobee hosts the Top of the Lake Arts Festival featuring fine art, musical entertainment, and children’s art activities. The purpose of this art and music fest is to bring talented fine artists to the Okeechobee community, as well as showcase local artists and student artists. Meanwhile, foodies will love the Taste of Okeechobee on Saturday, February 11. Taste of Okeechobee is an opportunity for art festivalgoers to stroll along Park Street, sampling flavorful dishes from local restaurants and businesses.
Certainly one of the most anticipated local events of the year, the Speckled Perch Festival will be held March 11-12. The Speckled Perch Festival is the oldest celebration in Okeechobee, dating back to 1965 when it debuted as a way of honoring the fishing industry. There will be local talent; food; arts and crafts; and more. Simultaneously, rodeo fans can get up close and personal with the roughest-and-toughest professional bull riders and bullfighters at Florida’s Cow Town Rodeo held on March 11-12, 2017.
Throughout the Fall and Winter, snowbirds can travel 30 minutes to Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park, a 54,000 acre preserve that is home to a variety of endangered plants and animals and is perfect for hiking, biking, bird watching, and even star gazing.
For fishing enthusiasts, the largest freshwater lake in Florida, Lake Okeechobee, features largemouth bass, crappie, and bluegill, while the surrounding Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail is perfect for hiking and biking. Boat tour and fishing charters are also highly popular in this part of Florida, with a number of great charter and tour companies to choose from including several highly rated ones found on TripAdvisor.
Golfers, meanwhile, can take advantage of several nearby nine and 18-hole courses including the KOA Golf Course, Blue Cypress Golf Course, and Spring Lake Golf Course, among others. For those who enjoy the occasional game of chance, nearby Seminole Casino Brighton features over 300 gaming machines, 4 poker tables and more.
At Okeechobee’s Quail Creek Plantation, sportsmen can hunt bob-white quail from October to mid-March, turkey hunting from March through early May, and sporting clay shooting (prices vary) as the calendar permits. Guide Services are also available for boar, deer and alligator hunting, in season.
Finally, the area is rich with cultural activities including several major museums, performance theaters and galleries that are all located within an hours drive.
