Silver Palms RV Village

Living in Okeechobee

Silver Palms RV Resort Village is located in the historic town of Okeechobee, Florida, on the northern tip of Lake Okeechobee, the second largest lake in the United States. As Florida’s coastal areas on the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico have become overpopulated, more and more people are discovering the advantages of living in the “heartland” of the Sunshine State.

Okeechobee is perfect for all who love the outdoors. The area brings together lake, the cross-state Okeechobee Waterway connecting Stuart on the Atlantic Coast and Ft. Myers on the Gulf of Mexico, and a spectacular inland countryside in the tranquil beauty of the sleepy center of the state. Yet the area offers many opportunities for shopping, with Publix, Super Wal-Mart and Home Depot all within a mile from the Silver Palms RV Village gates.

Fishing in the huge Lake Okeechobee is a major attraction, as sports fishermen troll its waters for largemouth bass, bluegill, Okeechobee catfish and black crappy (known locally as “specks”). They frequently compete in fishing tournaments in its vast waters. Covering over 730 square miles, the lake is also a great place for a leisurely sail or cruise, with many lovely inlets for a floating picnic or simply communing with nature.

Around the lake is the unique Herbert Hoover dike, with some 110 miles of the Florida Scenic Trail winding around the lake for those who enjoy biking and hiking.

Nature is not disturbed here. Birdwatchers will enjoy seeing the nesting ground for many varieties of waterfowl, and they may spot eagles, osprey, hawks, caracaras and black vultures. Four different groups of reptiles are found here, as are manatees, the “gentle giant” mammal, that frequently wanders up the Waterway seeking warmer waters. Other more prevalent mammals are raccoons, muskrats, bobcats and marsh rabbits, but it is not uncommon to see a river otter giving a spectacular swimming display.

Many historic attractions are located in the Okeechobee area. The area also is known for its prosperous cattle ranches and for delicious fresh vegetable and fruit grown on small area farms.

Visitors often are treated to rodeos, and they may even see a cattle drive down the main street of Okeechobee. Efforts are underway to restore the historic downtown of the city, and it is a nice “day trip” to nearby Sebring or to the elegant shops of West Palm Beach. Disney World and other Orlando attractions are only 90 minutes away, mostly up the Florida Turnpike.
